'Indestructible' Support Construction Conserves the Wood

Date: All year

Summary:
A wooden pier makes the garden pond even more attractive. In order to be able to enjoy the sight for as long as possible, such constructions should have a long life span. On many piers the boards are directly attached to the beams. The connecting surface often doesn't completely dry out, causing the wood to rot and drastically reducing the pier's life span.

A solution to this problem comes with a pier-system developed by pond construction experts at NaturaGart in Ibbenbüren. The beams are made of purpose-designed aluminium profiles which can be universally used thanks to the many screw channels. The profile is especially versatile due to its system of supports and fastenings. The boards screwed onto the profile rest on thin ribs which easily dry and therefore last much longer. Should it become necessary, the boards can easily be unscrewed and replaced.

Expansion:
Chemical treatment of wood used in piers is not recommended, because part of the treatment is washed out by the rain and ends up in the pond. Skin contact, too, can be a problem with chemically treated wood, for example if one sits down on it with naked thighs.

If the wood is not treated, however, it may deteriorate quickly. Even tropical wood suffers from local climate conditions. To this has to be added the fact that the use of such wood contributes to the destruction of tropical forests, because often the durable types of wood don't originate from guaranteed cultivation.

The profile developed by NaturaGart allows for the use of local types of wood, avoiding all these problems.

Usually, piers are built with about 40cm overhang on the water. Self supporting constructions of up to 1.5m are possible, too. Piers and bridge-modules can be individually combined, spanning up to six metres. According to guidelines, they can carry loads of up to 300kg/m². Using several of our standardised modules most design problems can be solved.

The system is quite easy to assemble: Bridges and Piers can be screwed together in relatively short time without problems. Most aluminium surfaces can be disguised with stove enameled green or brown covers so that the construction integrates perfectly into the pond landscape.

The NaturaGart construction system allows for individually designed, economic realisation of the most varied piers and bridges.

The various modules and bridges can be assembled into different pier constructions.
In NaturaGart's park the large piers allow access to the show ponds. When boards are screwed onto beams they don't dry properly and rot within a few years.
When the boards are screwed directly onto the supporting beams, they don't dry properly and rot within a few years' time.
A view from underneath the pier reveals the secret to its stability: Boards lie on sturdy aluminium profiles that can be disguised with coloured covers.
The robust aluminium profiles can easily be interconnected thanks to their integrated screw canals.
A clamping mechanism attaches the boards to the aluminium profile. The wood only touches the thin ribs which dry out easily.
The boards can easily be tightened from above, or replaced without problems.
